UAE approves extradition of Daniel Kinahan to Ireland in major organised crime case

Decision follows ruling by Dubai Court of Cassation and highlights growing judicial cooperation between the UAE and Ireland in combating transnational organised crime

Abu Dhabi: The UAE has approved the extradition of Irish national Daniel Kinahan to Ireland following a final ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation, marking a significant step in judicial cooperation between the two countries in the fight against transnational organised crime.

The development was announced following a phone call between Abdullah bin Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, UAE Minister of Justice, and Jim O’Callaghan, Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration.

Kinahan is regarded as one of the most wanted figures linked to international organised crime and is accused of leading an organised criminal group, as well as involvement in murder and illicit narcotics trafficking. The extradition follows an official request submitted by the Irish authorities.

According to a joint statement, the decision was issued in accordance with the extradition agreement between the UAE and the Republic of Ireland and was based on a final ruling by the Dubai Court of Cassation.

The two ministers said the decision reflects the shared commitment of both countries to upholding the rule of law and strengthening cooperation in addressing serious cross-border crimes.

They noted that the case demonstrates the advanced level of judicial collaboration between the UAE and Ireland in tackling transnational organised crime, particularly offences linked to international criminal networks involved in murder and drug trafficking.

The ministers stressed that the decision sends a clear message that individuals accused of serious crimes will not find safe havens to avoid justice and that international cooperation remains essential in pursuing and prosecuting dangerous offenders.

Al Nuaimi reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to expanding judicial cooperation with Ireland and strengthening partnerships with countries around the world.

He said the case highlights the UAE’s position as a trusted international partner in judicial cooperation and reflects the country’s support for global efforts aimed at combating organised crime, pursuing offenders and preventing them from evading justice.

O’Callaghan expressed appreciation for the efforts of the UAE authorities throughout the extradition process and praised the professionalism of the country’s judicial institutions.

He described the decision as an important milestone in bilateral judicial cooperation and underscored the value of international partnerships in confronting organised crime that operates across national borders.
