Emirates switches on crypto payments for flight bookings in the UAE

Emirates switches on crypto payments for flight bookings in the UAE

Emirates has gone live with Crypto.com Pay across emirates.com and the Emirates App, allowing customers to settle the cost of a flight in digital currency. The option went live on 28 July 2026 and is open to eligible UAE residents booking fares priced in Emirati Dirham (AED).

For UK companies with staff based in or routing through Dubai, it is the first time a carrier of Emirates’ size has put a digital wallet directly into the checkout flow. The airline says transactions are processed in line with UAE regulatory standards, which matters for finance teams that need a clean audit trail on every ticket purchased.

The launch is the first substantial output of a partnership signed a year ago. Emirates and Crypto.com agreed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2025 to look at building crypto payments into the airline’s digital systems, and the two firms have moved from paperwork to a live product inside twelve months.

What it means at the checkout

The booking journey differs by device. Travellers using the Emirates App are handed over to the Crypto.com app to authorise the payment, then returned to Emirates to confirm the ticket. On desktop, a QR code appears at checkout, the payment is approved inside the Crypto.com app, and the e-ticket is issued on screen.

The integration runs through Crypto.com’s Dubai entity, the first Virtual Asset Service Provider granted a Stored Value Facilities licence by the Central Bank of the UAE. That licence is the reason the payment sits inside a supervised framework rather than operating at the fringes, a distinction that will decide whether corporate travel policies allow it at all. UK readers weighing the wider case will find the arguments for and against in our earlier look at how crypto can simplify international business travel expenses, alongside the growth of account-to-account payment providers chasing the same lower-fee territory.

Who Emirates is aiming at

Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, said the launch reflects the airline’s commitment to expanding payment choice and meeting the expectations of a younger, digitally fluent generation who manage their travel entirely from their phones. He added that moving “from signature to launch” in just one year highlights both teams’ agility and the UAE’s supportive regulatory environment for fintech innovation.

Eric Anziani, President of Crypto.com, described the partnership as a milestone for the company and praised the UAE’s forward-thinking approach to digital payments, saying the collaboration supports Emirates’ ambition to adopt new financial technologies.

The move also serves a policy target. Dubai’s Cashless Strategy, part of the D33 Economic Agenda, aims for 90 per cent of all financial transactions across government and private sectors to be digital by the end of 2026. An airline processing millions of bookings a year is a useful contributor to that number.

The practical caveats for UK travellers

The restrictions are worth reading carefully. The facility is limited to eligible UAE residents, and fares must be priced and settled in AED. A London-based traveller booking a Heathrow to Dubai return in sterling cannot use it today. Emirates has not published a timetable for extending the option to other markets, so UK buyers should treat this as a signal of direction rather than a tool they can deploy this quarter.

That said, the direction is clear enough. Emirates becomes one of the first major global carriers to place a Web3 payment rail inside its own booking engine rather than routing it through a third-party reseller, and the airline has form on trialling technology at scale, as its expanding cabin service programmes show.

For travel managers, the questions now are the familiar ones. How does a crypto-settled fare reconcile against an expense policy written for card payments, how is volatility handled between booking and settlement, and what happens on a refund. None of these are answered by the launch itself. They will be answered by whichever finance team goes first.
