Convective clouds are expected to develop over eastern, southern and internal parts of the UAE, with temperatures remaining in the high 40s.
Dubai: Get ready for a whole week of summer rain, starting today.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasts partly cloudy weather today, in general, with convective clouds formation over some internal, eastern and southern areas, associated with rainfall.
The science behind summer rain
According to the NCM, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) – a low-pressure belt near the equator, where northeast and southeast trade winds meet – is currently advancing northward. Together with the extension of an upper-level trough from the east (an elongated area of low pressure and cool air located high in the atmosphere), and a surface low-pressure system from the south, moisture is being drawn in from the Sea of Oman.
With rising temperatures and the influence of mountains in the eastern part of the country, local convective clouds are developing over eastern and southern regions, particularly in the afternoons. Once these clouds form, there is a strong chance of rainfall, of varying intensity, according to the NCM.
High temperatures across the board
What does this mean for your day-to-day routines? Expect high temperatures over the next few days. Today, the NCM forecasts coastal and island areas to record highs of 42°C to 47°C, while internal areas will range between 45°C and 50°C. Mountainous regions will be relatively cooler, with temperatures between 33°C and 39°C.
Among major cities, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah will see highs of 46°C today, while Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah are expected to peak at 45°C.
Sea conditions
Light to moderate winds will average speeds of 10 to 25km/h today, and reach 35km/h in coastal areas. If you’re heading to the beach, both the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman are expected to see slight conditions, meaning gentle waves rising to a maximum of two feet on-shore, and three feet off-shore.
