An offshore oil spill originating from a damaged commercial tanker off the coast of the United Arab Emirates has significantly widened, prompting a new wave of precautionary beach closures across the Northern Emirates.
Satellite imagery captured by the European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 network highlights a growing hydrocarbon slick spreading across the Gulf waters toward the shorelines of Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Sharjah. Maritime risk analysts confirmed that the spill stems from structural damage sustained by the tanker Gem No. 2.
In response to the expanding slick, municipal authorities and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment have enforced strict preventative restrictions. All public and private beaches in Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain remain closed until further notice, alongside targeted closures at Al Hamriyah Beach in Sharjah. Environmental protection teams and specialized marine contractors are operating round-the-clock containment efforts, deploying booms and skimmers to protect fragile coastal habitats and diverse marine life across the region.
