Motorists making the popular route between Sharjah and Dubai are set to benefit from the opening of the first section of the Al Taawun Tunnel project by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) in the coming November.
The new road is projected to ease congestion along one of the emirate’s busiest routes and shorten peak-hour waiting times by up to 85 percent once completed.
The new underground tunnel, which is located at the busy crossroads of Al Taawun Square, will have three lanes for each direction.
When completed, it will be able to cater to 4,000 cars per hour during peak time, providing an alternate route for thousands of motorists that head towards Al Nahda and Dubai on a daily basis.
The multi-phase development represents a central pillar of Sharjah’s strategic master plan to overhaul primary transit corridors linking the northern emirates to Dubai.
Final completion of the entire Al Taawun interchange project is targeted for February 2027. Transport officials confirmed that civil works are progressing on schedule, supported by round-the-clock construction shifts.
This infrastructure push forms part of a broader, multi-million-dirham investment in regional mobility. Concurrent projects include a Dh140 million upgrade at the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street and Mleiha Road, which incorporates a three-lane flyover to streamline traffic bound for Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Eng. Yousif Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the SRTA, highlighted that the authority is executing an integrated transit framework.
This initiative pairs modern civil engineering with sustainable practices, such as cold asphalt recycling and the deployment of artificial intelligence inside public buses to analyze traffic safety and operational data in real time.
