How Sharjah Ruler Helped Save a Historic Armenian Church from Collapse

The UAE is helping to restore one of the Christian landmarks in Armenia. This restoration is an indication of the UAE’s dedication to maintaining its cultural heritage as his Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi was instrumental in saving the historic Hnevank Monastery from falling into ruins.

The Hnevank Monastery is very old. It was built in the century. It is in the Lori Province, in Armenia. Over time the monastery got badly damaged from rain and snow and earthquakes. The walls got cracks and the foundations got weak. The stones got broken. This made the old building unstable so people knew they had to do something to save it. The Hnevank Monastery is an important place and it needs to be fixed so it would not get any worse.

Recognising the site’s historical and cultural importance, Sheikh Dr Sultan funded a comprehensive restoration project aimed at stabilising and preserving the monastery for future generations. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Armenian authorities, conservation experts and heritage specialists, who worked to reinforce the structure while carefully maintaining its original architectural character.

The restoration involved repairing collapsed sections, strengthening the building’s foundations, restoring ancient masonry and preserving intricate carvings and decorative elements. Specialists relied on traditional construction techniques alongside modern conservation methods to ensure the work respected the monument’s historical authenticity.

Sheikh Dr Sultan has long championed the protection of cultural heritage, both in the UAE and internationally. Under his leadership, Sharjah has supported numerous archaeological, educational and restoration initiatives, reflecting the emirate’s broader commitment to safeguarding historic sites and promoting dialogue between cultures.

Armenian officials and heritage experts have praised the project, describing it as an important contribution to preserving one of the country’s most significant religious landmarks. The restored monastery continues to attract pilgrims, historians and visitors interested in Armenia’s rich Christian heritage, while serving as a symbol of international cooperation in cultural conservation.

The project has also strengthened cultural ties between the UAE and Armenia, demonstrating how heritage preservation can foster mutual understanding and respect across nations. It highlights the growing role of the UAE in supporting global efforts to protect sites of outstanding historical and cultural value.

Today, Hnevank Monastery stands restored and protected, allowing future generations to appreciate a monument that has survived for more than 1,300 years. The restoration remains one of Sheikh Dr Sultan’s most notable international cultural initiatives, reflecting his enduring commitment to preserving humanity’s shared heritage.
