Former Corporate Executive Establishes Dedicated Women-Only Muay Thai Space in Dubai

A former corporate worker in the UAE has led a change in the martial arts scene by starting a special Muay Thai place just for women. This place is meant to make fighting training easier to get to, safer and better suited for women in the culture.

Lara Fawzy, a person from Britain moved to Dubai more than 15 years ago. She left her job in the world to focus fully on combat sports after training in Muay Thai for ten years.

Her own path had a challenge when she hurt her arm badly during a sports event in 2016. She needed surgery to put a metal plate and nine pins in her arm. She came back strong and won her very first amateur fight.

Recognizing a distinct gap in the regional fitness landscape—where combat instruction was overwhelmingly male-dominated and held in mixed-gender spaces lacking privacy—Fawzy sought to build a specialized facility.

Muay Thai practitioner delivering a kick to a padded target held by a partner in a gym, wearing ornate black shorts and gloves.

She observed that standard male-oriented training models often failed to account for physiological differences in how women train, while social intimidation frequently deterred prospective female athletes from attempting the discipline.

To address these barriers, the Dubai-based gym incorporates tailored safety protocols, including specialized high-density matting, while preserving traditional Thai technical standards derived from Fawzy’s extensive training in Thailand.

Local participants highlight the facility as a structured environment for physical conditioning, self-defense skill acquisition, and personal resilience, countering common misconceptions that martial arts induce excessive muscular hypertrophy.

The establishment of female-centered combat facilities coincides with a broader expansion of gender inclusion across regional combat sports, strongly backed by governing organizations such as the UAE Muay Thai and Kickboxing Federation. Over the past decade, local participation rates among female fighters have surged significantly across competitive weight classes.

While gaps remain in overall representation across the regional combat ecosystem, industry advocates view dedicated spaces as crucial infrastructure for fostering long-term female athletic development and personal empowerment throughout the Middle East.
