They are urging drivers not to bring their vehicle to a halt on roads with traffic, unless there is an unavoidable situation.
Even if a driver stops briefly on a road when there is traffic they could still cause a hazard for other motorists trying to pass, especially on fast or motorways. Police said that drivers should pull over to the side of the road or into another suitable place if their vehicle has a mechanical problem or suffer a puncture.
Drivers are also encouraged to switch on hazard warning lights immediately and contact the relevant emergency or roadside assistance services if they are unable to continue their journey safely.
Officials explained that sudden stops in active lanes can trigger chain-reaction crashes as other motorists may have little time to react, especially during busy traffic periods or in areas with limited visibility. The risk is even greater on highways, where vehicles travel at higher speeds and braking distances are longer.
The latest advisory also reminds motorists to remain inside their vehicles only when it is safe to do so and to follow instructions from emergency responders if assistance is required. Drivers should avoid attempting roadside repairs in live traffic and should prioritise moving themselves and their passengers away from danger whenever conditions allow.
